Sand Chronicles 5 by Hinako ASHIHARA
Sand Chronicles is one of those shoujo series where I actually hurt along with the characters. I’m not one of those girls who cries at every sad movie, but I admit that I have a tendency to be vicariously sappy, even with certain manga or characters.
That said, this volume wasn’t as heart-wrenching as a few of the previous volumes. It’s the summer of Ann and Daigo’s 17th year, and a good chunk of the volume is spent on them as actual individuals, trying to figure out their individual paths in life. It was actually enlightening to see them both struggle about what to put in their career proposals, and then later having a clearer vision in the end of what they’d want to do after high school.
The bumps in their relationship, though, have not disappeared. In a way, I can understand Ann’s manic ups and downs — yes, she wants to be with Daigo, but no, she doesn’t want to be with Daigo. And poor Daigo has to deal with being stuck as the first love of not one, not two, but three teenage girls! It doesn’t seem like things will get any easier for them, and that’s all right, because a problem-free relationship (even in manga) doesn’t come easy.
Love, love this series. Can’t get enough.
