Happy Fun Links: ‘Boys’ on the way
- Viz Pictures licenses the 20th Century Boys movies. I dig that somebody at Viz -gets- it. Japanese live-action movies based on anime/manga don’t necessarily make a big splash beyond the usual otaku crowd and film festival geeks, but if you don’t even bring the movie to this demographic, then how do you expect to sell it? By licensing the movies just as their release of the manga is moving along, Viz is keeping the fans of this work sated and satisfied.
- And also from Viz, One Piece fans can expect 5 volumes of this series each month during January to June 2010. It’s crazy, yes, but as an unabashed One Piece fan, I say bring it on! This series has never received the same love and attention that other lesser Shonen Jump manga have, so I fail to see how the catch-up will harm this manga even further. It’s almost as if Viz has listened to my plea to quicken the release pace so that I can continue reading the story and not be too behind the Japanese releases. I’d rather give Viz my money than rely on scanlators so if that means I’m going to get a glut of One Piece next year, I don’t really see what the problem is with that situation.

Your logic regarding having fans satisfied has a flaw: licensing does not equal release, and in fact in case of ViZ it most assuredly does not. They sat on Honey and Clover for years before finally releasing it; Nodame Cantabile is licensed and is nowhere near a release, or even a press release. If they keep it up, this new license will see a release some time in 2014.
