It wasn’t really fair to offer me this manga to read. Other than the fact that I’ve heard a lot of good things about Iwahara (from King of Thorn) already, I’m powerless when it comes to cats. And this manga has lots of them!

The plot seems simple at first: Yumi Hayakawa enters Matabi Academy as a first-year student. Matabi has this policy where they allow the students to bring cats into the dorms. So, of course, Yumi brings her pet Kansuke along for the fun.

Yumi’s hobby is making clothes for her cat. I mean, if you’re a cat-owner yourself (or know any), you know that putting cats in cute outfits is done at the risk of death or dismemberment. Kansuke hates it, and tries to communicate it to Yumi, but of course, being a cat, he can’t really talk.

Turns out, Matabi Academy is the site where a powerful cat demon named Kaen has been sealed. Yumi and Kansuke somehow get involved into fighting the demon, along with the rest of the other guardians of the site.

Honestly, this series is like a fun mish-mash of most of the things that I enjoy about anime/manga. It has supernatural monsters with grudges, interesting pair fights, some aspects of student life… and did I mention cats? In the author’s note, he mentions how he wants this series to be less serious than his other works; that he wants this to have the feel of an anime. I think he pretty much nailed that on the head.

I would definitely advise you to pick this book up and give it a chance. Iwahara manages to craft a series that is both familiar and surprising in its mood. I’m looking forward to reading more.
