Special terms and concepts defined.
Amenosa - A spy that visits each of the regions ruled by a ryanban. He is separate from the government and is not supposed to interfere in the everday business of the region. His job is to inspect, thus making it necessary for him to travel to different countries. Nobody knows when or where the amenosa will arrive, and that is why Chunyan suspected Syaoran and the rest to be the amenosa because of their strange costumes.
Ameterasu - She is a Shinto sun goddess and the mythical ancestress of the royal family of Japan. In the Suwa Province arc, she is the Empress of Japan and she arrives to see Kurogane around the time of his mother's death.
Fuugatsu - "Wind Moon." Name of the Hanshin restaurant where Masayoshi takes Syaoran, Fye and Kurogane, and where Touya and Yukito also work as waiters.
Hitsuzen - A naturally foreordained event; A state in which other outcomes are impossible. A result which can only be obtained by a single causality, and other causalities would necessarily create different results. (N.B. xxxHolic vol. 1, Del Rey, 2004) First uttered by Yuuko when Watanuki enters her shop (in xxxHolic), and repeated again when Syaoran, Fai and Kurogane arrive within mere seconds of each other. Actually, in an interesting bit of trivia, Yuuko was not the first CLAMP character to mention the idea of hitsuzen. In the Card Captor Sakura anime, episode 46 (Sakura and the Final Judgment), Mizuki-sensei says that "there is nothing but hitsuzen." Clow Read says the same phrase later in the episode.
Kagamiwari - (alt. kagamibiraki) The sake cask breaking ceremony as seen during the wedding in Chapitre 68. This is a special ritual celebrated in special events such as New Year's, weddings, anniversaries, or openings of new businesses. Literally translated, it means "breaking the mirror," with the circular lid of the sake cask (as the mirror) being broken open by the guest of honor using a large wooden mallet.
Koko - Name of the Hanshin currency.
Kudan - Beings (or spirits) that haunt the people of Hanshin. They come in various types, and have different classes according to the power. They range from the 4th class types (very weak) to special type (very strong). One doesn't need to be a citizen of Hanshin to have a kudan; even Syaoran, Fye and Kurogane were able to obtain kudan during their stay in Hanshin.
Manjyu - A Japanese steamed rice cake, usually with bean filling (anko). Kurogane often calls Mokona by this term mostly because it resembles a fluffy white rice cake.
Mekyou - the sfx that Mokona makes whenever it detects one of Sakura's feathers
Miko - A Shinto shrine maiden. They are often the daughters of the priests who worked in the shrine. Common roles include assisting the priest in rituals (e.g. weddings) and performing ceremonial dances. It is important to understand that Shinto religion believes that evil is caused by spirits, hence the purpose of most Shinto rituals performed by the miko is to keep away evil spirits by purification, prayers and offerings. Kurogane's mother and Tsukuyomi (Tomoyo-hime) are both miko.
Negi - the dice game that Sakura played in the marketplace in the country of Koriyo. Also called saikoro.
Okonomiyaki - a Japanese pancake, which also happens to the specialty of the the country of Hanshin. Masayoshi takes the three heroes to a restaurant so that they could have a taste of this dish.
Ryanban - "Jurisdictional lord." In the country of Koriyo, this is the person who is in charge of ruling over the town. Chunyan believes that the current ruling Ryanban is unjust and is not ruling well.
Shinban - "Master of the Secret Arts." Chunyan's mother was a Shinban of Koriyo country. She was able to perform magic, cast charms, and make medicine.
Tayuu - title for Karen in Shura Country. There are multiple meanings for this word, which include (1) leading actor in a Noh play; (2) Edo-period courtesan; (3) ancient official. Some translators have chosen the first meaning, as Karen is the leading performer in Suzuran's troupe, but knowing Karen's previous occupation in X, the second definition may also be applicable.
Tsukuyomi - The Shinto moon god and brother of Ameterasu. In Japanese myth, the fight between Ameterasu and Tsukuyomi explains why there is night and day. In the Suwa arc, Tsukuyomi is the official name of Tomoyo, the princess of Shirasaki Castle.
White Day - March 15, which is exactly a month after Valentine's Day. In Japan, White Day is the holiday where the men reciprocate the gifts & chocolate that the women gave them on Valentine's Day. In Tsubasa, Yuuko is upset that Syaoran, Kurogane, and Fai didn't reciprocate her Valentine's gift of chocolate fondant and is withholding their clothes till they give her a White Day's gift.
Witch of Dimension - The name that Yuuko is known as. It appears that she is among the few people who can travel across various dimensions and worlds.
