introduction
Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE started in Issue 25 of Shuukan Shonen Magazine (Weekly Shonen Magazine) in 2003. Its central characters are two of CLAMP's most popular creations, Sakura and Syaoran, from the series Card Captor Sakura. This action & fantasy manga has since spawned 14 volumes of manga published in several languages, an anime series, and a 30-minute movie.
Sakura is the princess of a desert nation named Clow. Syaoran is her childhood friend, the son of the archeologist called upon to investigate mysterious ruins in the desert. A mysterious occurrence in these ruins causes Sakura to sprout wings, which then dissipate all over the universe. Syaoran's quest is to retrieve the feathers of Sakura's "wings" and thereby return her memories. Accompanying them on their journey are Kurogane, a short-tempered ninja; Fai, a light-hearted magician; and Mokona, a fluffy white creature that transports them across the various worlds.
It is worth mentioning that even though Sakura and Syaoran are recurring characters from a previous CLAMP series, Tsubasa is not a sequel of Card Captor Sakura. The characters may intrinsically be the same, with the same personality and characteristics from their previous incarnations but only placed in an alternate universe setting. It could even be argued that Tsubasa is CLAMP's own version of an AU fanfic.
Yet another distinguishing feature of Tsubasa is the sheer number of crossover characters who appear in various parts of the series. CLAMP has drawn upon their most popular series, including Chobits, X, Magic Knight Rayearth, and RG Veda, and selected several of their popular characters to grace the pages of Tsubasa as well.
