Republic of Hanshin

Name Origin: The three kanji which spell out Hanshin also spell out "Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto," which happens to be the same area that Hanshin is based on.

An island nation shaped like a tiger. According to Sorata, it is one of the happiest places to be. The people appear to be satisfied and content -- where their only worry is if their baseball team (baseball being their national sport) will win. This nation is a mix of old and new: one part of the city has neon lights and stores, yet the other part has an ancient castle.

However, in Hanshin, people are also haunted by spirit beings called "kudan." Some people use their kudan to terrorize, yet others just have kudan to help or protect themselves.

NOTE: The Republic of Hanshin was based after a real Japanese baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. The mere fact that everything in Hanshin is based on or is related to a tiger (the currency, the flag, the shape of the island) is a not-so-subtle hint from the ladies of CLAMP.

It also appears that a lot of the places in Hanshin are from actual places in Japan. This site (Japanese only) shows the landmarks that appeared in the Hanshin arc, with a helpful Mokona as the tour guide.
